As the reigning MVP, Matthew Stafford is no stranger to being called the best quarterback in the NFL right now, but maybe the order behind him is up for debate. Dave Portnoy released his top-10 quarterbacks list on Monday and the L.A. Rams’ QB was first, unsurprisingly, but Lamar Jackson was nowhere to be found.
Instead, Portnoy had names like Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels above Joe Burrow, and Jalen Hurts above Lamar and Dak Prescott. Could you agree with this list as it is:
Even Drake Maye above Josh Allen is flat out incorrect, but Portnoy is a Patriots fan.
Where the top-10 is wrong
In my opinion.
Maye is going to experience a fall from near-MVP this season unless he gets dramatically better with A.J. Brown. His stats were inflated last season and then New England was gifted a trip to the Super Bowl with one of the easiest playoff schedules of modern times.
Allen should be top-2.
Patrick Mahomes is a three-time Super Bowl winner, so it’s fair to give him the benefit of the doubt after returning from his injury.
Caleb Williams had easily one of the most overrated quarterback seasons in the last 20 years. He also needs to get better, not just climb out of holes that he dug for himself.
Jayden Daniels was not very good last season and that was before the injury. His recent publicity for going after LSU for “disrespecting” him has not helped his case.
Burrow has things to clean up in his game and he does get help from his supporting cast, he also needs to stay healthy. But he’s a lot better than Caleb and Jayden. He’s also probably better than Maye.
Hurts? Nothing needs to be said.
Sam Darnold is riding on the high of the Super Bowl, same as Hurts apparently, and his NFC Championship performance against the Rams definitely earned him some points given how poorly had he played against L.A. before then. But he’s entering the prove-it season now.
Jordan Love? Well, I don’t even consider 10th to be that high. It’s a very debatable position no matter who is there.
Although Lamar Jackson does get overrated too, he’s certainly better than a few names on this list.
