Chris Jericho is out doing media to promote his upcoming tour of the UK with Fozzy, while wrestling fans are still waiting to see if it’s true that he’s gone from AEW and heading back to WWE.
During an
interview with Soundsphere, Jericho was asked about ageism in music and wrestling. Here’s what Chris had to say about it, courtesy of Soundsphere’s transcript.
“It’s never too late. Ageism does exist, and you can’t worry about it. Your age is your age, but you can’t worry about it, it’s not a death sentence to be in your 50s, right or your 60s and 70s, there’s still time to do things. Maybe you’re not going to have a career like The Rolling Stones, but you can still do it – write a song, record a song, audition for parts – all that stuff you can still do! The biggest detriment to success that we have is ourselves! Why not (do it)? Someone’s got to do it, so why don’t you?”
That naturally led to a discussion about reinventing himself as an artist, which Jericho is well-known for doing numerous times throughout his pro wrestling career. Jericho said it’s an important thing to be able to do at any age.
“Reinvention is important at any stage of your career, because you want to keep people excited and motivated about what you’re doing. The [Rolling] Stones last record, ‘Hackney Diamonds’ was great. Why wouldn’t The Stones release a new album? Because they’re artists, and that’s what artists do. Keeping things fresh and exciting is something I believe in wholeheartedly. There’s nothing wrong with having tinges, but you still want to create new things as well, so you’re not just a nostalgia act.”
Will Chris Jericho be able to pull off another successful reinvention to keep wrestling fans excited about his career at 55 years old if he returns to AEW or WWE in 2026?
I think he has a much better chance to pull off that feat in WWE. More fans there will be eager to see him return after being gone from the promotion for so long, as opposed to AEW where the fans seemed tired of his act and he could no longer manipulate their reaction the way he desired. But you can let me know in the comments below where you think Chris Jericho best fits into the pro wrestling landscape in 2o26, Cagesiders.
