Newcastle United are preparing for a monster summer rebuild, with both incoming and outgoing movement expected following a season disrupted by injuries, inconsistency, and glaring underperformance on nearly all fronts.
Responding to a fan question about the scale of recruitment, the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope outlined the club’s current thinking, hinting at between “six and eight” players arriving in Tyneside next summer.
“Based on recent conversations—and with an expectation that a few could leave—the
number of potential incomings spoken about starts at six and goes as high as eight,” Hope said.
Departures could shape the final total, as we know how financials work in the Premier League—looking at you with tears in my eyes, Elliot Anderson.
Hope reported that loanee Aaron Ramsdale is likely to return to Southampton, while Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth are expected to leave as free agents. Fabian Schar has yet to sign a contract extension. Those four, however, wouldn’t leave a penny in Newcastle’s coffers, while definitely needing one-for-one replacements in place come August.
Uncertainty also surrounds several high-profile players, although all of those will definitely bring back vast amounts of cash—at the obvious expense of losing talent.
“There is no certainty over the futures of Tino Livramento, Sandro Tonali or Anthony Gordon, even though the latter pair are contracted until 2030,” Hope said. “Livramento, as revealed in this column last year, has not engaged in new contract talks and, with two years to run, an offer from suitors Manchester City would have to be considered. The more folk I speak to, the more I expect that deal to happen.”
Tonali’s future may also depend on external interest in Newcastle’s midfielder and Italy’s maestro.
“As for Tonali, suggestions that he’s indicated he wants to stay next season are not yet the case,” Hope said. “That’s not to say he’s communicated he wants to leave, but if a fair offer comes along and he indicates a desire to pursue it, I don’t think we’ll see a summer-long saga like last time with Alexander Isak.”
At the end of the day, Hope arrived at the conclusion we all have in our mind: PIF must be aware and recognize the need for firm decisions, not fall for another Isak-like trap, and fill the team with a much-needed boost of depth and quality for the 2026-27 season.
“The club knows that decisive action – be that with incomings or outgoings – is necessary this time around,” Hope wrote.
