Bayern Munich fell just short in the Champions League this past season to a Paris Saint-Germain side in the semifinals that showed exactly why they were the 2025 champions of the competition. After a thoroughly impressive group phase, Bayern might’ve fared better with a little more luck in their knockout stage opponents as they had to knockout Real Madrid in the quarterfinals to setup the tie with PSG, but nothing can take away the domestic double Vincent Kompany’s side secured with flying colors.
122 goals scored in the Bundesliga and 17 goals scored on the way to the DFB-Pokal title, having knocked out all of RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, and VfB Stuttgart to lift the cup – all teams that finished in the Bundesliga’s top 6.
It’s now time for most of Bayern’s players to shift gears to World Cup preparations, though, and the domestic double celebrations have thus been a bit short-lived. It will be a quick turnaround in the preparations for Bayern’s 2026/27 season, especially for the internationals that go far in the World Cup, as Kompany has officially stated training will start the day after the World Cup final on July 20th, though it’s not yet determined just how long of a break all of the players playing in the World Cup will get.
Nonetheless, Joshua Kimmich already has very high hopes for next season and he wants the German Rekordmeister to go the distance and secure another treble, following suit from 2013 and 2020. “Yes, absolutely. Success is certainly a reward, but it’s also always a challenge to confirm it and make it even better. That will be the task for next year. Of course, we need to make a few adjustments. We’ve lost a few players in Leon, Rapha, and Nicolas. We’ll have to replace them well, and then hopefully we’ll be able to challenge again,” Kimmich replied when he was asked by Bild whether or not the treble is the goal for next season for the German champions (via @iMiaSanMia).
Of course, the squad could look a bit different come August, as Kimmich alluded to Bayern saying farewell to Leon Goretzka, Nicolas Jackson and Raphaël Guerreiro, leaving spaces to be filled. The age-old adage does say to strengthen when you’re already at your best, and for Bayern it’s hard to imagine their attack getting better than it was this past season, but they’re still trying to bring in Newcastle Unuited’s Anthony Gordon and Hertha Berlin’s Kennet Eichhorn as their top transfer targets for this summer.
