Bayern Munich goalkeeper Sven Ulreich was thrust into action against Bayer Leverkusen after injuries to Manuel Neuer and Jonas Urbig kept the club’s top two options at goalkeeper on the sidelines.
The veteran would answer the call — and in a big way.
Ulreich had six saves, including four inside the box as he helped the squad claw out a point on the road during its 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.
“When you haven’t played for so long, you take a few minutes to get into the rhythm because playing games
is different to training. In the end things have gone well and I had fun on the pitch. The boys have known me for a long time and have confidence in me, they know I’m always there when I’m needed. Manu and Jonas texted me before the game and said they were happy that I got to play. We have a great relationship within the goalkeeping team.” Ulreich said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
What made Ulreich’s effort more impressive is that he had to contend with red cards to both Nicolas Jackson (42nd minute) and Luis Díaz (two yellow cards — 74th minute, 84th minute). Surely, the Bavarians could not have asked for much more out of Ulreich, especially because the only goal he conceded came off of a shot that deflected off of Jonathan Tah and completely changed its trajectory.
