Real Madrid’s last visit to Racing Santander ended in a goalless draw on September 21, 2011, when José Mourinho’s side endured a frustrating evening at El Sardinero.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema both started, but neither could break down a Racing team organised by Héctor Cúper. After a defeat at Levante, the result left Madrid with just one point from two away matches.
Mourinho selected Iker Casillas in goal, with Álvaro Arbeloa, Raphaël Varane, Ricardo Carvalho and Marcelo across the defence.
Xabi Alonso partnered Lassana Diarra in midfield, while José Callejón, Mesut Özil and Ronaldo supported Benzema.
Sergio Ramos was among the substitutes, while Varane replaced the injured Pepe.
Madrid struggled to turn possession into clear chances. Racing restricted Alonso’s influence and defended stubbornly, leaving the visitors increasingly reliant on efforts from distance.
Mourinho introduced Ángel Di María at halftime, then sent on Gonzalo Higuaín and Kaká as he searched for a breakthrough. The changes brought no reward.
Casillas also had work to do, saving an Óscar Serrano effort after the interval. Madrid eventually left Santander without a goal, a victory, or the response Mourinho had wanted after their setback against Levante.
