Max Eberl recently extended his contract at Bayern Munich, but not everyone was fully in favor of bringing back the board member for sport.
Supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted to Abendzeitung (via @iMiaSanMia) that he abstained in the vote to bring back Eberl:
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirms that he did not vote for Max Eberl’s contract extension during the last supervisory board meeting: “I thought long and hard about whether I should vote ‘No’ on the contract extension with Max.
It was only during the meeting that I decided to abstain. I stand by that decision. For me it was important to make my decision independently and not allow myself to be prejudiced by a recommendation made beforehand.”
Rummenigge also stressed that there were several things he did not like in the lead-up to the vote. He said he had communicated his concerns internally.
Eberl has certainly had his critics at Bayern Munich and it is at least somewhat surprising that Rummenigge’s influence (even in abstention) did not alter anyone’s else vote. Eberl survived and got a new deal, but he might have to work a little harder to win over the club’s former CEO.
