According to a report from Sport Bild’s Maximilian Wessing, Borussia Dortmund is eager to keep center-back and Germany international Nico Schlotterbeck away from Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, and the other
potential suitors lurking about and could name the 25-year-old captain next season:
That a defender can also become a figurehead for Borussia Dortmund was recently proven by Mats Hummels (36). Nico Schlotterbeck is now expected to follow a similar path. During contract negotiations, it was made clear to him that he is not only meant to become a leader on the pitch, but also a role model for the club. To that end, the club’s management is planning to make him captain for the upcoming season.
Borussia Dortmund wants clarity by spring at the latest on whether the German international will extend his contract, which runs until 2027. Sources within the locker room indicate that the players are also optimistic that Schlotterbeck will stay long-term. He feels too deeply rooted at BVB and doesn’t discuss other clubs internally at all. The aim is to extend his contract until 2030.
There is likely an appeal for Schlotterbeck to be mentioned in the same breath as Hummels, a legend at BVB. It might not be easy, but maybe there is a way (and a lot of money, too) for Borussia Dortmund to keep its start center-back out of the clutches of its archrival, Bayern Munich.
Bayern Munich has kept up its winning ways and things are all good in Bavaria.
However, that does not mean that the Bayern Munich content machine has ceased production on talking points for us. Let’s jump in and have some fun. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Football Works — Weekend Warm-up Show:
- Should we make anything of the Lennart Karl story from Tz? Why some folks could be overreacting to much ado about nothing.
- Let’s review Bayern Munich’s summer transfers and loan…how are they doing? Would any of them have helped this season?
- Touching on some of the most recent news — Liverpool and Manchester City to striker out on Michael Olise? Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz already looking for exit to Real Madrid?
- Reviewing the debut episode of HBO’s Welcome to Derry.
