It’s going to take a little while for me to get over the shock of the Tennessee Titans trading Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears. The fact that the Titans were able to get two first-rounders out of the deal is a great haul. You have to give Mike Borgonzi credit for maximizing his return on his best asset. Now, he just hit on the picks he acquired.
In the bigger picture for the Titans, this trade tells me that Borgonzi has already decided Cam Ward is not the answer at quarterback. The only reason
to trade Simmons is if he thinks the Titans aren’t going to be able to compete before Simmons starts his decline. The only reason he would feel strongly enough about that to actually make the trade is if he had given up hope that Ward is going to turn into a franchise quarterback.
To me, Borgonzi made the right call here. Crazier things have happened than Ward being able to turn it around, but we have seen nothing through his first season and a half in the league that would give us hope that he can develop into a franchise quarterback.
