At this point, Germany is desperate. It has been eight years since Germany humiliated themselves at the 2018 World Cup and things have not gotten better, as the country is now without a knockout-round victory at football’s biggest tournament since 2014. After Joachim Löw failed at the 2018 World Cup, Hansi Flick failed in 2022 and Julian Nagelsmann followed suit in 2026. Jürgen Klopp is the latest to try and right the ship for Germany, but German fans’ desperation will not make things easy. There
is a furore around finally landing Klopp as manager and the “savior” of German football, but history shows that even the most highly rated managers cannot solve problems on their own.
Klopp knows this and is annoyed at all the attention. “It’s always been too much for me. I can’t prevent it, I don’t need it,” Klopp stated bluntly (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I don’t think about it, I said that 1,000 times.”
Even managing Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool FC can scarcely prepare someone for shouldering the hopes of an entire country. The situation becomes even more farcical when one remembers how he (rightly) got labeled as a traitor by some for becoming global head of football at Red Bull. Now anointed Germany’s last hope by some, Klopp will have work to do to live up to these expectations.
