This afternoon, Louisville Slugger announced that Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman has won the Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award for catcher in the National League.
The 26 year old is the 17th
Rockie to earn a Silver Slugger, and it marks the 33rd instance in which a Rockies player has won one. In addition, he is the first Colorado Rockies catcher to win. Trevor Story won the organization’s most recent Silver Slugger in 2019.
As a reminder, in 144 games, Goodman slashed .278/.323/.520 (.843 OPS) including 28 doubles, five triples, 31 home runs and 91 RBI. He was among National League leaders in SLG (.520, 7th), home runs (31, T-8th), extra-base hits (64, T-11th), OPS (.843, 12th) and RBI (91, 13th).
He also led all qualified NL catchers in each of those categories.
Goodman was the first NL catcher to have a 30-home-run season since the Braves’ Javy Lopez hit 43 in 2003.
In terms of the Rockies, he was the first Rockie to record at least 30 home runs since Charlie Blackmon (32), Trevor Story (35), and Nolan Arenado (41) in 2019.
And before the “Coors!” chants start, Goodman hit 18 home runs on the road, 13 at home.
In mid-October, Purple Row first made the case for Goodman winning a Silver Slugger.
The Silver Slugger Award is the top offensive award in Major League Baseball, with the season’s best players at each position selected in a vote by MLB coaches and managers in their respective leagues.
