Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso spoke to the media ahead of Real Madrid’s trip to Elche on Sunday. He was asked about the break and how it helped the players that stayed in Madrid, and his general assessment
of the options at right-back, to which he said: “Trent used this break to train and get better from his injury. And Fede is continuing with it. Options are opening up for us. Militao played at full-back for Brazil, even Asencio.”
Alonso on the players’ fitness after the international break
“Everyone’s doing well, the atmosphere is good. We’re going to Elche, they’re a newly promoted team but they’re playing well, it’ll be a tough match.”
Alonso on criticism
“We know where we are, the demands, we handle it normally, we don’t give it more weight.”
Alonso on whether the physical condition has impacted results
“I’m not assessing his current form in terms of physical condition. We’re in a very demanding phase of the schedule, with many matches in a short period. The physical condition is improving… but we have to live with injuries. Let’s see if we can reduce Militao’s absence a bit.”
Alonso on Mbappé not having a shot on target in two games
“It’s a team thing. We’ve analysed it. It’s a team thing. We also have to go for set pieces… The goals will come back, I have no doubt.”
Alonso on Thibaut Courtois
“His recent seasons at crucial moments have brought memorable saves… It’s not just his quality, it’s his way of communicating, he’s a pillar, he wants to have responsibility.”
Alonso on making sure his players have the right attitude
“I did it by working with them for two and a half hours [After Vallecas]. Explaining who we are, what we want, and what needs to be done. Then it’s time to prove it… All visits are demanding, that’s just how it is.”
Alonso on tactics and man-management
“Both are important, given the environment we’re in. We need to be mentally strong and balanced, so it’s not an emotional rollercoaster after every game; we need to be a little tactful… and a little firm.”
