After a benches-and-dugout-clearing fight that resulted in three ejections in a loss that was Colorado’s 100th of the season on Tuesday, it’s anyone’s guess as to what will happen when the Giants (70-69) and Rockies (39-100) conclude their series at Coors Field on Wednesday.
Colorado’s Kyle Freeland and San Francisco’s Matt Chapman and Willey Adames were all ejected on Tuesday after Freeland had words for Rafael Devers, who hit a massive homer and admired it for too long for Freeland’s liking. Freeland was
pushed by Chapman, who received a one-game suspension, but he is appealing the penalty, so he is eligible to play on Wednesday. All four players were fined undisclosed amounts by MLB.
While the Rockies have officially sealed their third consecutive 100-loss season and still need three more wins to avoid beating the White Sox 2024 mark that is the worst record in MLB modern history, the Giants enter the day 8.5 games out of first in the NL West and five games back in the NL Wild Card race as San Francisco is tied with the Reds just past the current Wild Card spot holders (Cubs, Padres and Mets). Meanwhile, the Rockies have lost 10 of their last 12 and have gone 1-4 on their current homestand.
Germán Márquez (3-12, 6.14 ERA) will be on the mound for the Rockies, who had to use five bullpen arms for all nine innings on Tuesday after starter Kyle Freeland was ejected after eight pitches. This will be Márquez’s second start since returning from the IL, where he was from July 21 until Aug. 29 with right bicep tendinitis. His return didn’t go so well. He gave up eight runs on nine hits, including two homers, on three walks with no strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Robbie Ray (10-6, 3.18 ERA) will get the start for San Francisco. The 33-year-old lefty and 2021 American League Cy Young winner will be making his 29th start of the season. Ray has posted 163 strikeouts in 164 innings. This will be Ray’s third matchup against the Rockies this season. On May 2 at Coors Field, he held Colorado scoreless in seven innings with two hits and seven strikeouts in a 4-0 Giants win. The Rockies did better the second time around on June 11 in San Francisco when they scored four runs (two earned) on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in four innings, but still lost 10-7.
