The 2026 NFL Draft kicks off in just one week, and excitement is building in the host city of Pittsburgh.
It has been nearly a century since the Steel City last hosted the NFL Draft. Known for its die-hard sports fans, black and gold is bled across vast distances. From the beautiful landscape in Butler to the historical and compact streets of Mt. Lebanon and all the way through the tunnels and bridges of downtown Pittsburgh, you will always have a friend when the topic of sports arises.
Construction
for the spectacle has been underway just outside of Acrisure Stadium since late March. Located on the North Shore, visitors can expect a stunning view of the city’s skyline, three rivers, and even the famous incline. Consequently, guests can plan to experience Pittsburgh and all it has to offer in a variety of ways.
As the draft is expected to bring in hundreds of thousands of NFL fans, here are ways you can capitalize on your trip while staying close to the venue.
Cuisine
Known for Primanti Brothers sandwiches, Heinz ketchup, and mouth-watering pierogies, Pittsburgh cuisine has a taste of its own. Aside from the famous destinations you hear of, what does the city of bridges have to offer?
Peppi’s Old Tyme Sandwich Shop
Just a short walk from Acrisure Stadium, Peppi’s Old Tyme Sandwich Shop offers a classic Pittsburgh aesthetic. Opened in 1983, the 40-plus-year-old sub restaurant offers a taste of Western Pennsylvania in more ways than just its food. If you’re yearning for a quick bite with vast historical value, Peppi’s is your spot.
Pamela’s Diner
Looking for a great breakfast spot on the morning of the draft? Pamela’s Diner in the Strip District has you covered. Also opening in the 80’s, Pamela’s has received national attention for its devour-worthy dishes. The retro diner puts a modern spin on everyday breakfast fare while also embodying the Pittsburgh spirit.
North Shore Tavern
North Shore Tavern offers an accessible, niche dining experience for locals and visitors alike. Known for its ‘steak on a stone,’ diners can receive their entree on a boiling hot rock, allowing for an immersive meal. Additionally, North Shore Tavern is an excellent spot to indulge in Pittsburgh beer. Connected to Mike’s Beer Bar, over 300 locally brewed beverages are at your disposal.
Activities/Experiences
While sports are among Pittsburgh’s most beloved idiosyncrasies, there is much more depth and history to explore. It would be nearly impossible to include everything there is to see in the Steel City; that said, here are a few activities and experiences that will have you eager for a return to Pittsburgh.
Duquesne Incline
The previously mentioned incline is a quick and easy option that offers beautiful views, a Pittsburgh-only experience, and a plethora of memories—located just above Station Square and just below Mt. Washington. The century-old cable car is one of the few of its kind still operating and is something visitors will regret missing.
Mattress Factory
Do not let the name fool you; this is not the store to choose your next comfortable sleeping arrangement. The Mattress Factory is a contemporary art museum just a few streets north of Acrisure Stadium. Here, artists can express their visions without limits.
The unique venue is meant to embody an artist’s creative journey, not simply the final product. People from far and wide are invited to visit and enjoy the processes and creations of fascinating individuals.
Afternoon in the Strip District
Once you finish breakfast at the aforementioned Pamela’s Diner, the Strip District offers excellent coffee, groceries, and quirky shops.
From La Prima to De Fer, your caffeine desires can be met at several destinations in the Strip District. A wide variety of hot, iced, lattes, Americanos, and more await you all within a short walk of one another.
Following your boost of energy, you can explore a variety of unique grocery stores. Starting with Penzey’s, you have endless options of spices, herbs, and more to take home. If you need something to cook with, the Olive Tap can be your next stop. Focusing on some of the strangest olive oil flavors you have ever heard, touching a new part of your palate will become a reality. Finally, Wholey’s Meat and Seafood offers some of the freshest poultry in Pittsburgh.
To end your Strip District afternoon, a few pieces of memorabilia may feel right. Yinzers In the Burgh gives a stylistic spin on Pittsburgh gear with store-specific apparel. Lucy’s Handmade Clothing is another option visitors would be remiss not to experience. Gathering items from across the world, you will not know what to expect when you see the wide variety of never-before-seen shirts, pants, accessories, and hats.
Point State Park
The Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio rivers all connect at Point State Park. One of the most beautiful locations for a picnic, bike ride, or even sightseeing, the Point has it all. Due to its size and beauty, the Point will even host a draft experience next weekend, featuring local businesses, autograph tents, and more immersive experiences.
While this list certainly does not touch on every beautiful thing the city has to offer, the hope is that visitors can experience what locals know and love. Next week, when all eyes are on the Steelers and the NFL alike, do not forget the beautiful city that gave it everything to host graciously.
