A fact that may interest you about Steward Berroa: His name is Steward, not Stewart as most people probably assumed when they heard it for the first time. (I tried to find a way to work in a Denethor joke.) Sadly, there wasn’t all that much else interesting about Berroa or his contributions to the 2026 Phillies.
This was his third major league season, spending the previous two with the Blue Jays and Brewers. The Phillies purchased him from Milwaukee in early June and stashed him in AAA for most of
the year. He was called up at the end of May and appeared in six games before returning to the minors for the remainder of the season.
Oh, he also pitched a game for Lehigh Valley, so that’s slightly interesting!
The stats: 6 games, .143/.143/.143, 0 HR, 0 RBI, -0.1 WAR
What went right
He got an RBI single in his Phillies debut, but that was about it as far as major league accomplishments go.
In the minors, he had a good on-base percentage (.363) along with 15 stolen bases.
He also had a child in June, so good for him!
What went wrong
He only batted .251 with five home runs in 242 plate appearances with Lehigh Valley.
The future
He’s a switch hitter with good speed and defensive ability, so it might be worth keeping him around as a “Quad-A” outfielder next season. Maybe he’ll be a late bloomer, but it doesn’t seem like he’ll ever hit well enough to stick for long on a major league roster.
Grade: D
He had an RBI and he wasn’t the worst reserve outfielder the Phillies trotted out there this season, but that was a low bar to clear.
