We’re in the holiday dead zone. Christmas has come and passed. Hanukkah long since ended. New Year’s isn’t here yet, and Kwanzaa is bridging the finished holidays and the yet-to-arrive one.
It’s usually all quiet on the baseball front, but not everyone has gotten the message. Over the weekend, among other moves that were made, the Baltimore Orioles beefed up their rotation by re-signing Zach Eflin.
The San Francisco Giants, as we’ve grown fairly accustomed to this offseason, didn’t do anything. And
yet, we can say with reasonable confidence, that the Giants will do something at some point. It will probably happen in the new year, but it could happen as soon as today. After all, Tatsuya Imai’s posting window is coming to a close soon (it expires on Friday), and nine of Fangraphs’ top 25 free agents (ranked by projected WAR in 2026) remain unsigned (the nine, in order: Kyle Tucker, Bo Bichette, Alex Bregman, Framber Valdez, Ranger Suárez, Cody Bellinger, Eugenio Suárez, Zac Gallen, and Chris Bassitt).
Surely, a move or three is coming, but what kind will it be? Will it be the biggest swing the Giants make this offseason? Will it be a small deal to add a little extra depth to the bullpen?
I’ll predict the next move the Giants make is to add a mediocre fifth starter on a modest two-year deal. Someone a little better than Adrian Houser, but not much. I’ll also hope that my prediction is wrong.
