Former Duke star Jayson Tatum, as you probably know, ruptured an Achilles tendon and was expected to do a full year’s rehab before returning to the Boston Celtics.
As anyone presumably can understand, rehabbing from that particular injury is really difficult. First, your heel being your heel, it’s going to take a lot of stress and when you push off, you’re going to put immense pressure on your Achilles. It’s one of the toughest injuries to get past.
One of the basic requirements of recovering from
that is hard work and Tatum is nothing if not a hard worker. And it looks like that hard work might be paying off as Tatum is reportedly ahead of schedule.
Over at NBCSportsBoston.com, Darren Hartwell has some news, quoting this from Boston radio show Zolak & Bertrand: “The Celtics are very happy with how hard Jayson Tatum has been working at his rehab, and his level of focus and intensity in the rehab process…(Tatum) did not leave town. He has been here the entire time. … Since the injury, he has not left town and he has been inside the building at the Celtics’ facility with their people and their team almost every single day for months.”
Crucially, one of the hosts also says this: “He’s doing things that nobody asked him to do.”
Tatum gets a certain amount of criticism as being overrated but one thing no one gets on him about is effort. Tatum has always worked hard and it appears nothing has changed in that regard. There’s no way to know for sure yet but he may make it back sometime late in the season.
