Newcastle United has reportedly re-emerged as one of the leading contenders to sign a young Premier League forward this summer.
Following other moves completed of late by Chelsea, striker Liam could leave the Blues before the transfer window closes, just over a year after the Magpies missed out on landing him during his final days at Ipswich Town.
Newcastle was among the clubs that pursued Delap before he chose Stamford Bridge in 2025, and talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs now reports that Newcastle, along with
Everton, is one of two Premier League sides firmly in the picture as the England Under-21 international’s future comes under renewed scrutiny.
Chelsea’s recent signing of veteran Danny Welbeck has bolstered the forward depth and the competition for minutes in attack, prompting questions about Delap’s role with the Blues and whether he could seek regular first-team football elsewhere.
“I think there’s a fair chance that Liam Delap goes, and there’s certainly historical interest from both Everton and Newcastle and growing Premier League interest more generally,” Jacobs said. “And if they’re lower down, you can say you want to fight for your place, but with only domestic football, they’ll realise very quickly that they have to go. So, departures are going to be key there.”
The Magpies were one of several Premier League clubs, alongside Manchester United, Everton and Nottingham Forest, that pursued Delap after Ipswich’s relegation in 2025. According to BBC Sport at the time, Chelsea ultimately won the race after securing Champions League qualification and convincing the striker the club offered the best sporting project.
Delap went on to make 41 appearances in his first season at Chelsea, scoring twice in all competitions. Whether Newcastle renews its pursuit will likely depend on Chelsea’s willingness to sanction a departure later in the transfer window once Xabi Alonso settles his rotation.
