Things have gotten a little dark around here since Thursday night. Of course, all of that is warranted. The Lions may have been underdogs against the Buffalo Bills, but there was an expectation for them to fight better than that. Falling behind 21-0 and showing no life of defense was undoubtedly a concerning development, especially off the heels of nearly blowing a 21-0 lead of their own.
But we’ve spent plenty of time, space, and breath on the serious concerns about the defense. Let’s spend some
time talking about the positives for a minute, because this is far from a lost season just two weeks into the year.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
What gives you hope about the 2026 Lions?
My answer: I still feel pretty darn good about the Lions’ offense. I think offensive coordinator Drew Petzing has designed some creative and effective plays in both the run and the pass game. That’s been especially true in the red zone, where the Lions have converted nine trips into seven touchdowns.
And while the run defense took a significant step back from Week 1 to Week 2, I feel confident that when/if the offensive line gets healthy, they’ll be just fine on that front. Jahmyr Gibbs still looks like an absolute stud, and Detroit is finding ways to get him more involved in the passing game, as well.
Jared Goff is still playing at a very high level, Amon-Ra St. Brown has looked uncoverable at times, and Sam LaPorta looks like himself after last year’s scary back injury.
If the Lions offense can continue to average 31 points a game (or close to it), they will be in every game this season, even if the defense can’t find a way to improve.
