According to a report from German outlet SID (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), German national team center-back Nico Schlotterbeck, who went down with an injury in training earlier today, suffered an ankle injury and was taken for an MRI to assess the situation.
Schlotterbeck, of course, suffered a ligament tear in his ankle last summer at the World Cup, which caused him to miss the beginning of Borussia Dortmund’s training camp and season:
Schlotterbeck is a vital piece of the German squad and is considered by many to be the country’s best central defender. For this international break, Schlotterbeck was expected to play a key role under Jürgen Klopp.
As one of the players rostered for all four games, Schlotterbeck was going to be key for his play on the pitch and his leadership. There were even rumors that he might captain the squad against Serbia and Greece, as normal captain Joshua Kimmich has left the extended camp.
