The Chargers are bringing in a familiar face to NFL fans they may not have seen for quite some time.
After half a decade away from coaching, former Dolphins and Jets head coach Adam Gase is joining the
Chargers staff as an offensive assistant who will be working with their pass game. The news was first broken by Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports.
Gase’s last coaching job was as the head coach of the Jets from 2019-2020. He finished his time in New York with a record of 9-23, including a 2-14 season in 2019.
Prior to the Jets, Case held the same position with the Dolphins from 2016-2018. In his first year at the helm, Gase led Miami to a 10-6 record and a playoff appearance but lost 30-12 to the Steelers in the wild card round. In 2017, they finished 6-10 to miss the postseason. In his final year, the Jets went 7-9 before Gase was fired following the regular season.
Gase made his name in coaching as an offensive coordinator with both the Bears and the Broncos. First with Denver in 2013 and 2014, Gase helped architect Peyton Manning’s historic and record-breaking campaign in which he threw for 55 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. The offensive also rushed for 1,873 total yards and scored 16 touchdowns on the season. Manning was named the NFL MVP that year and earned his seventh and final First-Team All-Pro honor, as well.
The Chargers now boast two former Miami Dolphins head coaches, both of whom cut their teeth as creative and progressive offensive minds. Will this lead to the big offensive payoff the fan base is searching for? I sure hope so. For now, Gase may feel like a hard sell to fans, but I highly doubt his hire would have happened if it wasn’t for a strong backing by the coaches already in the building.
