In Saturday’s ACC Action, Louisville topped Ohio 59-44, Virginia smacked Marshall 104-78, Clemson fell to Georgetown 79-74, SMU nipped Butler 87-85, BC got by Temple 76-71 and after a tight first half,
Syracuse blew out Drexel 80-50.
Louisville forced 17 turnovers, which is pretty good but the key thing to us is that Pat Kelsey loves him some threes and he got some here: the Cards were 16-35. Kennessaw State transfer Adrian Wooley, who like former UVA guard Isaac McKneely is a three point specialist, helped out here as he settles in to the offense, hitting 2-4 on his threes. He’s very dangerous.
McKneely hit 4-10 of his threes and Ryan Conwell 5-10.
Star freshman Mikel Brown had 7 assists.
Ohio isn’t in Louisville’s class but it was an impressive outing as the Cardinals move to 4-0.
Virginia basically doubled up on a typical Tony Bennett outing. The retired coach preferred to keep games in the 50s but Ryan Odom likes to run and it showed here: Virginia scored more in the first half (61) than Bennett’s teams typically did in a game.
Like Ohio, Marshall is not in Virginia’s class but we’re getting a sense of this team. The ‘Hoos shot 52% overall, 43% on threes and got to the line 36 times.
The Euro bigs Thijs Rider and Johann Grunloh had 23 and 16 respectively. Chase Mallory is becoming an interesting player. Just about 5-9, he’s currently coming off the bench and has been effective. He had 5 assists in 22 minutes.
In recent years, Georgetown has sort of been the sick man of the Big East, but Ed Cooley has things going in the right direction and the Hoyas are 4-0 with their win over Clemson.
Zac Foster and Carter Welling came off the bench for a major boost for the Tigers with 25 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists between them but Clemson couldn’t stop KJ Lewis, who had 26 points and got to the foul line a lot (11-14). He also had 5 steals.
Brad Brownell is really using his bench: 10 guys total got double digit minutes.
Boopie Miller had a heck of a game against Butler with 23 points and 12 assists. He also shot 9-13/1-2.
Butler led SMU at the half and was defending well, as you’d expect from a Thad Matta team, but the Bulldogs also had 11 turnovers at the break, finishing with 17. SMU ripped off a 15-2 run to start the second before Butler got back in it late: down 7 with a minute to go, they nearly pulled off the comeback.
Jason Pierre got a basket to put SMU up and Butler missed a potential game winning three.
Keep in mind that star freshman Jaden Toombs is out with a wrist injury. SMU moves to 4-0 with the win.
BC’s season so far is about missed opportunities: an overtime loss to FAU and a one-point loss to Central Connecticut. They’re not far at all from being 4-0 instead of 2-2.
Donald Hand had 18 points and 11 assists and helped the Eagles go up 70-57 before Temple rallied. Aidan Shaw had a big game with 14 rebounds, 7 points and 5 blocks. Worth noting: BC had 13 total blocks here.
Temple has fallen on hard times since John Chaney retired in 2006 but Adam Fisher might be worth keeping an eye on. The former Jim Larranaga assistant could turn out to be pretty good.
Finally, after a rough first half, Syracuse broke the game against Drexel open in the second. Playing for the second game without captain JJ Starling, out with injury, it took Syracuse a while to get going but the Orange did get going. Kiyan Anthony had 18 while Donnie Freeman and Naithan George had 13 each.
The ‘Cuse outscored Drexel 43-18 after the half. Anthony has been starting in Starling’s absence but he’s probably playing too well to bench, so it’ll probably be Nate Kingz.
Tyler Betsy did something to his ankle here but it doesn’t appear to be serious.
Like so many ACC teams, Syracuse appears vastly improved. Freeman and Anthony are both impressive so far and Starling will be much better now that he doesn’t have to carry so much of the load.
With the win, Syracuse moves to 4-0. Not that it matters very much, but 11 ACC teams are still undefeated.
