Transfer guard Zion Stanford has reportedly left the Villanova Men’s Basketball program.
Stanford did not travel to Chicago on Wednesday night as Villanova defeated DePaul, and the junior was not seen with the team during warmups for Saturday’s game vs. Xavier. Jeff Neiburg of The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Stanford is no longer with the team.
Stanford transffered in from Temple and suffered an ankle injury during the preseason. He dealt with knee issues as well, and ended up on the outside
looking in at the rotation. Stanford last appeared in a game on Feb. 4 and last practiced with the team on Tuesday.
Neiburg reports that it is “unclear” is Stanford will attempt to get a medical redshirt, which requires a player to appear in less than 30% of their team’s games. Stanford has appeared in 10 games this season, which is 32.35% of 31.
There was a chance that Stanford could work his way back onto the floor due to the recent season-ending injury to Matt Hodge, but that will not be the case as Stanford departs. He was viewed as a big get in the transfer portal after putting up 13.1 points per game last season at Temple.
Stanford is now the second Wildcat to leave the program, joining senior forward Tafare Gapare.
Stanford averaged 1.3 points in 5.1 minutes per game this season.
