Tony Haynes is retiring at the end of football season
Tony is an NC State grad and has been on the Wolfpack Sports crew since 1998. He did basketball and (still does) football, as well as the weekly coach’s
shows. He did a fine job as the analyst for Wolfpack basketball teamed for many seasons with Gary Hahn.
Chucky Brown will be the color analyst joining play-by-play man Matt Chazanow on the broadcast
The Wolfpack will have a whole new crew this season, Matt started last season in place of retired Gary Hahn and Chucky will step into Tony’s shoes in a few weeks. Scanning the press release (and Wikipedia) it does not appear that he has any experience doing radio coverage, but it’s unlikely anyone has a better resume for the job.
Chucky Brown: Resume for NC State Basketball Radio Analyst
He’s one of us – He went to North Brunswick high school in Leland NC just a couple of hours from Raleigh. His senior season he was named North Carolina’s Mr. Basketball.
He’s REALLY one of us – Jim Valvano recruited the 6’8” forward to play for the Wolfpack in 1985, and he played four full seasons. During his career he played with a bunch of fan favorites, including Chris Washburn, Nate McMillan, Ernie Myers, Charles “amphibious” Shackleford, Pano Fasoulas, Vinny Del Negro, Kenny Drummond, Quentin Jackson, Walker Lambiotte, Rodney Monroe, Chris Corchiani, Avie Lester and Tom Gugliotta.
He had some great seasons with the Pack
- ACC regular season champions 1985, 1989
- ACC tournament champions 1989
- First team All-ACC his senior season
- NCAA tournment all four seasons
- Elite Eight 1986
- Sweet 16 1989
NBA Career – He was drafted in the second round by the Cavaliers. He played for 12 different teams, tied for the second most by any player in NBA history. He got an NBA Championship ring with the Houston Rockets in 1995. Coincidentally, he played with Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon on that team.
Coaching Career – In 2004 he got a job coaching the Raleigh Knights (WBA), then was assistant at the Roanoke Dazzle, and LA D-Fenders. He then got the head coaching job with the LA D-Fenders. In 2019 he was named head coach at West Johnston high school in Benson NC, then in 2022 was hired to coach at St Augustine’s here in Raleigh.
North Carolina kid, Wolfpack star, NBA veteran, Basketball Coach
Over qualified? Perhaps. But somehow it seems appropriate that Chucky joins the RED RECKONING.
Welcome home Chucky, we’re rooting for you!
