Cleveland Browns fans will get their first taste of Todd Monken as the team’s head coach today when his team battles the Chicago Bears in their first preseason game. The most important thing people will be paying attention to this preseason is how the quarterback competition plays out.
Deshaun Watson will get the start this week, with Shedeur Sanders entering in the third quarter. That scenario will be flipped next week against the Buffalo Bills. Watson is expected to play the entire first half today,
as Monken wants to give equal looks at both quarterbacks in competition, with the hopes of getting them a two-minute drive as well. Both quarterbacks have been connecting on the long ball better in practice lately, with KC Concepcion, Denzel Boston, and Isaiah Bond all shining in particular.
We’re not sure exactly how long the other starters will play, but Monken had indicated that the first-unit (other than quarterback) would see about one series. Since both quarterbacks have been getting experience with the first- and second-team offenses in practice, chemistry and rhythm issues should be less of a factor.
This season, we’re going to be having one game thread for the entire game, so this will be your home to discuss the game for all four quarters!
