The Steelers made the Jabrill Peppers signing official on Wednesday — he’ll also be wearing… No. 40? — but simultaneously announced a number of roster moves as the team prepares for its Week 2 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
Per a team announcement, Pittsburgh signed cornerback James Pierre from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. To make room for him and Peppers, the team placed linebacker Malik Harrison and quarterback Skyler Thompson on injured reserve.
To fill the open practice squad
spot, the Steelers then signed quarterback Logan Woodside, who spent the preseason with the team.
With Will Howard still on IR, the Steelers now have just two quarterbacks currently on the 53-man roster.
Pierre was elevated to the active roster against the Jets and started as a gunner. Now, along with the Peppers signing, the Steelers have 10 defensive backs on the 53-man roster. However, starting strong safety DeShon Elliott has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game with a knee injury.
Harrison also suffered a knee injury against the Jets. Both he and Thompson will have to miss a minimum of four games before being designated to return later this season, if the team chooses to do so.
The Steelers now have just four inside linebackers on the 53-man roster. Sunday’s Seahawks matchup could lead to a bigger role for Cole Holcomb, who now slots in as the Steelers’ third inside linebacker after recovering from a gruesome knee injury in 2023.
