Most wrestling fans and analysts seem to agree that WWE has dragged down the main event of WrestleMania Saturday (Apr. 18) by unnecessarily adding Pat McAfee to it, in a nonsensical angle that involves Randy Orton saving WWE from its bad business metrics with Cody Rhodes on top.
You and I may hate the angle and think it sucks, but WWE CEO Nick Khan thinks we’ll probably change our tune by the time WrestleMania 42 wraps up, “especially” because of McAfee. Here’s what Khan told the Las Vegas Review-Journal
about his expectations for both main event matches this weekend at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
“Let’s see the reaction [when] the show is done. I think a lot of times with WWE storylines, they take a moment to develop. We have the good fortune when we’re on the inside of knowing where we’re going. If you look at the two main events, there is real heat there and when the storylines are blurred between reality and pre-determined outcomes in WWE, we think that always delivers. And with the (Orton and Rhodes) especially with the addition of Pat McAfee, we think both will overdeliver.”
As far as “knowing where we’re going” is concerned, I don’t think it makes Khan’s argument any better if where WWE is going next is that rumored tag team match of Orton & McAfee vs. Rhodes & Jelly Roll at Backlash in May.
The guy who runs WWE Creative, Paul “Triple H” Levesque, largely echoed Khan’s positive sentiment about McAfee today on ESPN’s First Take by saying the former NFL punter is excellent at getting people to talk about WrestleMania 42.
“It’s always pressure, but the thing is, talk is good, right? People are talking. And that is a good thing. Pat, love him or hate him, Pat makes people talk, right? And I think that’s what’s important here, is people are talking. This is gonna be an amazing show. This will be incredible, and it will deliver on all levels.”
Do you think all the negative talk about Pat McAfee is getting WWE good attention right now, and that he’ll ultimately help WrestleMania 42 surpass current expectations and be an incredible show? Let me know in the comments below, Cagesiders.
