Newcastle United’s front office is moving quickly to secure its defensive core for the long term, with talks over Sven Botman’s new contract now considered a top priority for sporting director Ross Wilson.
According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh
, Wilson has begun a detailed audit of player contracts across the first team, with particular focus on those approaching the final two years of their current deals. The review follows the recent revelation that midfielder Sandro Tonali secretly extended his contract during his suspension, ensuring his stay at St James’ Park runs until 2029, with an option through 2030.
Botman’s situation, however, is viewed as the most pressing considering his importance for Newcastle now and in the long-term future.
The 25-year-old defender’s current deal runs until June 2027, meaning he will enter its final 18 months in January. Signed from Lille in 2022, Botman has remained on his original terms and has since become one of Eddie Howe’s most dependable players when healthy.
After two injury-affected seasons, Botman has reestablished himself as a first-choice centre-back this campaign, forming a strong partnership with summer signing Malick Thiaw. Club sources told The Athletic that Howe sees the pair as the backbone of Newcastle’s defense for years to come.
During the summer, Botman drew interest from Bayer Leverkusen and other European clubs, but Newcastle refused to entertain any offers. Those close to the situation expect extension talks to begin soon, with Wilson determined to avoid a repeat of the Alexander Isak situation, when delayed discussions led to frustration over pay and his eventual exit.
While Botman’s performances have raised concerns about his knee injuries, Newcastle officials seem to want to move quickly to secure his future and reward his consistency.
