José Mourinho’s first spell at Real Madrid ended at the Santiago Bernabéu on June 1, 2013, with a 4-2 win over Osasuna. His departure from the club had already been confirmed before the final game of the season.
Mourinho emerged from the tunnel just as the match was beginning. The number of photographers gathered around the technical area was so large that, a minute into the game, the referee had to ask them to move away. The reception from the stands was divided. There were more whistles than applause
when Mourinho’s name was announced, while Ultras Sur repeatedly chanted his name. Banners included messages thanking Mourinho, while another read: “Hasta nunca, Mou.”
Mourinho spent most of the game on the bench. He barely stood up and limited his instructions to what was necessary. He did not celebrate Gonzalo Higuaín’s opening goal and showed no reaction when Karim Benzema restored Madrid’s lead in the second half. Michael Essien, however, ran directly towards Mourinho after heading in Madrid’s second goal and celebrated with him.
After the final whistle, Mourinho briefly applauded towards the Fondo Sur before disappearing down the tunnel. Around 15 minutes later, he returned to the pitch. Ultras Sur presented him with a commemorative plaque, and Mourinho posed for photographs with members of the group. Around 10,000 supporters remained inside the Bernabéu.
There was no final press conference. Mourinho left the stadium without speaking to the media, and no member of his coaching staff appeared in his place. That was Mourinho’s final game in charge at the Bernabéu. He was suspended when his Benfica side visited Madrid last season. He watched the game from the team bus.
The long wait is over; against Real Sociedad this Wednesday, the Special One is back home.
