Newcastle United’s scoring struggles have inevitably ramped up the speculation over potential forward additions, with Matthias Jaissle’s previous relationship with Ivan Toney bringing back reports of a potential interest in a reunion.
Sport Witness, relaying Saudi outlet WinWin, reported that Saudi journalist Khalid Al-Shenaif claims Jaissle wants Newcastle to sign the Al-Ahli striker.
“Jaissle definitely wants to sign him,” Al-Shenaif reportedly said. “If this happens, it will undoubtedly be a major
crisis.”
There are currently no negotiations between Newcastle and Al-Ahli and no agreement over a transfer reported elsewhere, but where there’s smoke there’s usually fire.
Both January and next summer have been mentioned as possible windows should the interest eventually develop into something more concrete, but for now nothing serious has emerged.
Toney knows Jaissle well after playing under him in Saudi Arabia. The 30-year-old has scored 86 goals and added 19 assists in 107 Al-Ahli appearances, including 72 goals under the German coach. Toney’s importance for the club has remained there this season, with the England international contributing 13 goals and two assists to Al-Ahli’s first 27 league goals.
A move to Newcastle would also carry obvious history, as Toney joined the Magpies as a teenager in 2015 but made only four senior appearances before leaving in 2018 following several loan spells.
Would you bring Toney back to Newcastle if Jaissle gets the opportunity, or should the club continue building around younger forwards? Share your thoughts in the comments.
