Though it was a slow week last week in terms of games, a group of players made their presence known with great performances. They are the finalists for Mid-Major Madness Women’s Player of the Week.
The
nominees are the following: Missouri State’s Kaemyn Bekemeier, Cornell’s Emily Pape, Arkansas State’s Crislyn Rose, Kansas City’s Tierra Trotter and Oregon State’s Jenna Villa.
Kaemyn Bekemeier, Missouri State
Bekemeier had a career day in the Bears’ 65-61 victory over Central Arkansas. The junior guard recorded career highs of 24 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. The Republic, Mo., native shot 8-for-12 from the field, including knocking down all three of her attempts from 3-point land. She also went 5-of-6 from the line. Bekemeier has eclipsed the 20-point mark five times this season and ranks second in Conference USA in scoring average (17.15).
Emily Pape, Cornell
Pape also scored 24 points, which was a season-high, in Cornell’s 82-50 loss to Stanford on Sunday. The senior from Park Ridge, Ill., knocked down a career-high six 3-pointers. She has scored in double figures six times this season and is averaging 11.2 points per game. Pape is 29 points away from 1,000 for her career.
Crislyn Rose, Arkansas State
Rose was instrumental in the Red Wolves’ upset of in-state rival Arkansas 81-72. The junior guard scored 15 points and dished out a season-high eight assists. She also had two rebounds, one steal and one block. The Sachse, Texas, native is averaging 11.1 points and 3.8 assists per game.
Tierra Trotter, Kansas City
Trotter nearly led the Roos to an upset win at Missouri Sunday, but they fell 71-67 in overtime. The guard from Pine Bluff, Ark., notched a season-high 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She also knocked down two of her five attempts from long range. The grad transfer added three rebounds, two assists and two steals. She played a season-high 41 minutes in the game
Jenna Villa, Oregon State
Villa scored 24 points and shot 8-for-16 to lead the Beavers to a 74-65 WCC-opening win over San Francisco. The junior also went 3-of-6 from behind the arc and converted all five of her free throw attempts. The junior from Arlington, Wash., added five rebounds and three assists.
