Bayern Munich had a moderately busy summer. There was no blockbuster transfer over a Harry Kane, or a massive departure such as Robert Lewandowski, but there was some great business done. One of the notable moves of the summer for Bayern Munich was signing PSV’s Ismael Saibari, and it turns out that this transfer didn’t just happen overnight.
Max Eberl spoke with Sport Bild about the club’s transfer window and had the following to say about the newly transferred Moroccan talent. “We had been monitoring
his development in Eindhoven for quite some time. It is no secret that we also looked at Anthony Gordon for the left wing. But we deliberately decided against it because he was simply too expensive. At the time, we had two strategies in mind: either Gordon or Saibari. After our Champions League match in Eindhoven, Vinnie spoke with Ismael. Afterwards, he came to me and asked: “Do we already know him?” My answer was: “Yes, we do.” – We continued to monitor him closely after that and ultimately signed him in the summer,” Eberl told Sport Bild, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
It is a little surprising to hear just how long Bayern had been monitoring, since there were vastly more reports about the club’s interest in Anthony Gordon. So far it has worked out great that Bayern signed Saibari on a discount rather than Gordon, and the deal was apparently six months in the making with the initial conversation taking place in January, when Bayern played PSV in the Champions League.
While it is hard for transfer news to go under the radar in recent years with social media changing the football landscape but it appears as though Bayern Munich are still great at getting proper business done.
