Gilbert Burns suffered his first defeat under the UFC BJJ banner Thursday night in Las Vegas, losing by first-round heel hook to fellow Brazilian talent Gabriel Almeida.
The retired MMA fighter was victorious in his UFC BJJ debut back in June, when he tapped out Horlando Monteiro with a rear-naked choke, and returned to UFC BJJ less than a month after a tech fall defeat to Khamzat Chimaev under wrestling rules at RAF.
“Durinho” shot for a takedown early in the match and quickly escaped a guillotine
threat from Almeida, but wasn’t able to do much from top position. Almeida managed to get to top position later in the round, going for the neck and before moving on to a leg attack. Burns did his best to avoid the position, but Almeida secured the heel hook for the tap.

UFC BJJ 12 was headlined by two championship matches, with Cassia Moura scoring a split decision over Adele Fornarino to remain flyweight champion, while Renato Canuto defeated Ethan Crelinsten via unanimous decision in the co-main event to capture the vacant lightweight belt.
