Dan Burn’s resurgence at Newcastle United has not gone unnoticed by England manager Thomas Tuchel, with the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope reporting that the 32-year-old defender is firmly in the frame for the 2026 World Cup.
“Tuchel’s loving Big Dan Burn’s return to left back in recent matches, as mentioned above, is not set to harm his England prospects,” Hope wrote. “Indeed, we understand Thomas Tuchel fully intends to take the Newcastle star to the World Cup next summer, so taken has he been by him on and off
the pitch.”
Burn, who has reclaimed a starting role under Eddie Howe, has been praised for both his versatility and his presence in Newcastle’s recent run. Burn’s move from the left flank to the left-sided center-back role left no room for Sven Botman, sending the Dutchman to the bench for the most part of the season.
Tuchel is understood to see Burn as a potential game-changer in international, bracket-based football.
“Tuchel believes the World Cup in the heat of North America will see a lot of matches labour towards low scorelines entering the final half-hour — and he wants Burn as an option from set-pieces, even if that is from the bench,” Hope wrote.
For Burn, who has yet to become a regular with the Three Lions, the prospect of heading to a World Cup represents a career-high milestone.
Burn’s consistency for Newcastle, however, isn’t to be denied, and combined with his unique physical attributes, has placed him among Tuchel’s trusted candidates for the tournament and the upcoming international breaks.
