The Darian DeVries era of Indiana men’s basketball officially began on Wednesday night with a 98-51 win over Alabama A&M at Assembly Hall in Bloomington.
For a fanbase that’s had to grow accustomed to too-close-for-comfort games against inferior competition, the game was certainly a welcome change. Archie Miller’s tenure rather notably began with a blowout loss to Indiana State while Mike Woodson’s first season started with a close win over Eastern Michigan.
It became apparent pretty early that this
team wouldn’t suffer a similar fate. Alabama A&M isn’t exactly stiff competition, but Indiana scored at will throughout the first half and kept the Bulldogs from generating any sort of good looks. The Hoosiers had a few chances to reach the 100-point mark in the closing minutes, but didn’t convert.
The Hoosiers were led in scoring by Reed Bailey, who put 21 points on the board shooting 7/9 from the field and 7/7 from the charity stripe. Other notable performers include Lamar Wilkerson, who scored 19 while shooting 4/10 from deep and Tucker DeVries, whose 18 points lifted him above the 2,000 mark in his collegiate career.
Indiana is set to take on Marquette on Sunday at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois
