Bad break (no pun intended) for UNC basketball as freshman star Caleb Wilson suffered a fracture in his left hand in Saturday’s loss at Miami.
You may have noticed that after a certain point, he had his
hand taped, and everyone believed that it was not a big deal.
As it turns out, it is, and we’ve heard 4-6 weeks, or indefinitely.
It’s a tough break for the kid from Atlanta and for UNC. He’s by far the best player they have and he probably can’t be replaced. However, without him, Hubert Davis has some options. Jarin Stevenson is 6-11 and has played well enough to start. He could go with Luka Bogavac for more perimeter shooting.
His biggest problem may be replacing Wilson defensively. He really can’t do that actually, so this is a chance to measure his coaching creativity and leadership. We’ll see how he does, starting on Saturday when Pitt visits UNC. That shouldn’t be too difficult considering the overall talent disparity. However, they play in Raleigh on Tuesday and that could be very interesting indeed. As Dean Smith used to say, you can overcome an injury for a game or two, but it gets more difficult the longer a player is out.

Clemson’s loss to Virginia Tech was unexpected and it may have recast their season. Now 10-2, the Tigers go to Cameron on Saturday and though they’ve played very well this season, it’s never easy to win at Duke.
If they do lose, Virginia will be thrilled.
Also 10-2, the Cavaliers would be alone in second place. And while Duke still has to play Clemson, Syracuse, at Notre Dame, Virginia at home, then the short trip to Raleigh before closing out the season with UNC, Virginia has road games with Duke and Georgia Tech, and home games with Miami, NC State, Wake Forest, and Virginia Tech.
And since we started off talking about UNC, after Pitt and State, the Heels close out with Syracuse on the road, Louisville, Virginia Tech, and Clemson at home, followed by Duke in Durham.
The stretch run in conference play promises to be interesting, to say the least.
