Sydney Sweeney is taking a swing at a role that’s getting her a lot of award consideration as she transforms into boxer Christy Martin in her new film simply titled Christy.
The first trailer for the biopic dropped on Thursday ahead of the film’s release into theaters on Nov. 7
In the film, Sweeney portrays Martin who never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia—until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win,
she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster). But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it—confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death.
At her peak, Martin was one of the top women’s fighters in the world with a career that eventually earned her recognition after being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
But Martin also faced plenty of tragedy amid her triumphs, which included a volatile relationship with her husband that eventually spiraled out of control after he attempted to murder her in 2010.
Sweeney threw herself into the role after packing on an extra 35 pounds to portray Martin in the film while building on her athletic roots after training in grappling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu in her younger days to then play a boxer on screen.
Prior to the film’s debut, Sweeney admitted that she actually threw and got hit with real punches during filming to give the movie the authenticity it needed.
“Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force,” Sweeney told Vanity Fair. “I always believed that you would not be able to make it feel real if it’s a stunt double or if it’s faking the hits.”
