According to The Athletic, Newcastle United have recalled Antonio Cordero from his loan at KVC Westerlo and immediately arranged a new loan move for the winger to Cadiz for the remainder of the season.
The report states that Newcastle have already made the decision to end Cordero’s spell in Belgium after a review conducted following the arrival of sporting director Ross Wilson in October.
Cordero, 19, joined Newcastle on a free transfer from Malaga during the summer, having attracted interest from both Barcelona and Real Madrid before opting for a move to St James’ Park.
Cordero was sent to KVC Westerlo in August on what was intended to be a season-long loan, but with minimal playing time during his months in Belgium, NUFC has decided to put an end to such a farce.
The youngsters made just eight appearances in total, all from the bench, amounting to only 87 minutes of league football. That lack of exposure prompted Newcastle to reassess his development pathway midway through the campaign.
Cadiz were identified as an ideal destination given Cordero’s previous time in their youth setup and the competitive nature of the Segunda Division, where he played recently at nearby Malaga.
Cordero’s new team currently sit sixth in the Spanish second tier, seven points behind league leaders Racing Santander, and Newcastle view the move as an opportunity for Cordero to test himself in meaningful senior matches during the second half of the season.
