Michael Olise played 90 minutes and provided an assist to Kylian Mbappé in France’s 3-1 World Cup win over Senegal in East Rutherford, New Jersey in a man of the match performance that got Les Bleus off to a winning start in a tournament many are pegging them to win. In addition to his assist, the Bayern Munich winger had two shots on target, four key passes, fifty-one accurate passes, two successful dribbles, and was only dispossessed twice in the win over Senegal (via WhoScored) in an individual
performance that’s become par for the course for the former Reading and Crystal Palace man.
Speaking after France’s win, manager Didier Deschamps had high praise for the way Olise has grown into a world class player under Vincent Kompany at Bayern and said he feels France’s number 17 will continue to go a long way if he stays in Munich.
“Vincent Kompany played a very big part in Michael’s great rise. He had an outstanding season under him, with efficiency, character and personality. He will continue to be very good if he stays at FC Bayern. Today, Michael is one of the best players in the world, but media attention isn’t his thing. What’s important to him is the pitch; that’s where he wants to live his life,” Deschamps told SportBild after the Senegal win (via @iMiaSanMia).
After tallying 22 goals and 31 assists from 52 appearances across all competitions, it’s no surprise that a bevy of top European clubs have shown heavy interest in trying to pry Olise way from Bayern. Real Madrid’s zealous pursuit of the French international and prompt refusal to even entertain listening to offers from Bayern’s front office and supervisory board underlines just how world class of a player he is. As amazing as he is on the pitch, what’s equally as likable about him off the pitch is his grounded, humble demeanor – he never gets a big head or too far ahead of himself, which is not an easy thing to do at a young age.
With more positive performances at the World Cup with France, Olise’s value will only continue to climb, but Bayern have absolutely no plans of letting him go anytime soon.
