I just finished “Coaching High Performance Soccer,” Giovanni Trapattoni’s coaching text from the late 1990s, and something about it kept nagging at me the whole way through: this book is nearly 30 years old, and I don’t think it’s dated the way you’d expect a tactical text from that era to be dated. Not because the football looks the same — it doesn’t, not remotely — but because the underlying argument he’s making has quietly outlived the systems he built it for.
The thing that struck me first, before
I even got into the substance, is the first 60 or so pages of the book, out of maybe 100 total, are mostly just diagrams. There’s some text in there to explain them, the occasional paragraph to introduce an idea, but it’s largely just pages and pages of diagrams. Movement patterns, repeated variations of the same shape, players rotating through the same handful of spatial triggers over and over. It reads less like a philosophy text and more like a manual — which, I think, is exactly the point.
Trapattoni wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. The purpose wasn’t to come up with a new tactical or technical concept that would change the game forever. He was bringing his experience as a top level coach and telling you how it happened. And the idea behind those diagrams got the a subtle, almost unstated thesis to the whole book: coaches should reduce decision-making latency through automated spatial patterns. In other words, players shouldn’t have to be coming up with new solutions in the middle of a match, when fatigue is setting in.
Coaches should drill situations. Players should learn patterns. Then, in the heat of the moment, when everyone is exhausted and running a full tilt, players should be able to operate almost on autopilot. They should know when to make the run or pass based on what’s happened previously. They should know when the come help double team the ball carrier, when they need to shadow press, when they need to drop off, all based on what else has happened – and they shouldn’t be spending any extra time or energy making those decisions. It should be muscle memory by game day.
The line that ties it together, and the one people who know Trapattoni have probably heard before: “our football is prose, not poetry.” Prose is structured. It’s functional, methodical, bound by precise grammar. You don’t improvise your way through a sentence and expect it to still communicate — there’s a grammar underneath that has to hold, even when what you’re saying is completely new. That’s the whole book, honestly. Not “here’s how to defend a 4-4-2” but “here’s how to build a team that doesn’t have to think about defending a 4-4-2, because the thinking already happened on the training ground.”
The English translation of the book leans on phrases like “pattern play,” “situational responses,” “drilled routines.” The Italian football world has its own word for this that’s become pretty standard shorthand since: automatismi. Automated responses. A ball goes into a certain zone, and 3 or 4 players already know what happens next, because they’ve walked through that exact sequence in training dozens of times. The point isn’t to remove thinking from the game. It’s to remove the latency — the half-second where a player is still working out what the picture in front of him means, instead of already reacting to it.
Of course, the takeaway from the book wasn’t that we need to bring back a carbon copy of Trapattoni’s system or style in the modern game. Trapattoni himself said almost as much, noting that the way he liked to build his teams — with specific roles for each player — was less possible in the modern game as demand for versatility increased.
Instead, what I’m interested in is something narrower: the philosophical core — reduce latency, install pattern over instinct, treat structure as the thing that creates freedom rather than the thing that limits it — and whether that idea is still alive in the modern game, even in places that look nothing like Trapattoni’s own teams.
I think it pretty clearly is. You just have to know where to look.
Start with the most obvious case, Diego Simeone. Trapattoni himself has made the connection explicit, saying 2016, “I love Simeone, and I don’t think he would be offended if I said that his character is similar to mine, my teams had the same philosophy.” Simeone’s Atletico sides are an incredible image of what Trapattoni’s philosophy would look like in the modern game: a mid-block to compress space in front of the box, a press specifically engineered to force mistakes in wide areas, then getting vertical the moment they win it back rather than working the ball horizontally to reset.
If Simeone is the modern stylistic adaptation, Max Allegri is the modern philosophical adaptation. Allegri has talked about pointless possession the same way Trapattoni has, and he’s positioned himself, more or less, as a defender of the same Italian traditionalist coaching lineage Trapattoni helped define. Where Trapattoni had “prose, not poetry,” Allegri has corto muso — winning by the smallest possible margin, structure over spectacle, results over aesthetics. It’s the same argument restated for a different decade: football is not primarily an art form, and the teams that forget that tend to be the ones getting beaten by the teams that remember it.
And then, of course, there’s maybe the most clear case of Trapattoni having a modern disciple: Antonio Conte. Conte captained Juventus under Trapattoni and has referred to him as a second father. Philosophically, he also mirrors his mentor. In 2021, Goal quoted Conte as saying “one achieves success with method and discipline” — which could honestly be a Trapattoni pull quote if you didn’t already know who said it. Conte’s training grounds are famous for 11 v 0 drills, which is about as literal an expression of automatismi as exists in the modern game — running a full team shape through a rehearsed sequence with no opposition at all, purely to burn the pattern into muscle memory. And like Simeone, Conte’s sides are built to invite pressure and then punish it vertically rather than trying to pass through it.
What I think is genuinely interesting, though, is that you don’t need a direct Trapattoni lineage to arrive at automatismi. While Pep Guardiola comes from a completely different footballing tradition — learning from Johan Cruyff, a man who believed in extending freedom and decision making power to his players — he’s still landed on a version of the same mechanism anyway. His teams’ rotations are rehearsed. Their spacing rules are drilled to the point of near-automation. The philosophical starting point is different, but they’ve arrived at a similar destination: reduce the amount of live decision-making a player has to do in a fast-moving moment by installing the pattern beforehand. I think that’s actually the more convincing evidence that Trapattoni was onto something real and not just describing his own particular football culture — because coaches who owe him nothing keep landing on the same mechanism from the opposite direction.
Which brings me to Juve, and where I really wanted this piece to end up.
Luciano Spalletti isn’t a Trapattoni disciple in any direct sense, and he’d probably bristle a little at being filed next to him philosophically — he’s talked about “spaces over systems,” describing modern football as nearly positionless. That sounds like close to the opposite of Trapattoni’s fixed-role Zona Mista on its face. But watch the movement underneath the positional freedom and the automatismi are right there. Fullbacks inverting or overlapping depending on what’s in front of them, wingers cutting inside at a specific trigger — none of that is spontaneous. It’s rehearsed enough that a certain shape in the buildup reliably produces a certain reaction two or three passes later. The freedom is real, but it’s freedom operating inside a drilled framework, which is, I think, a pretty direct descendant of what Trapattoni was doing even if the vocabulary and the starting philosophy are totally different.
You see it in the space manipulation, too. Trapattoni preached overloading tight zones to create room elsewhere, and Spalletti’s teams do a version of the same thing — quick combinations in a crowded channel that draw bodies in, opening what’s effectively an artificial safe zone somewhere else on the pitch to attack into at speed. And even though Spalletti’s teams hold and use the ball far more than Trapattoni’s ever did, there’s still a real prioritization of verticality underneath the possession — buildup patterns that are structured to invite pressure specifically so the team can break through it quickly rather than pass around it forever. There’s also a Trapattoni drill I recognized directly in how Spalletti likes his wide players to work — getting all the way to the touchline before crossing back inside, inverting the defense’s facing rather than attacking it head-on. We’ve seen less of that specific wrinkle at Juve so far, though I think that’s personnel-dependent more than philosophical — we’ve seen him ask for it elsewhere.
There’s one thing I don’t think Spalletti has fully explored yet that I think fits the Trapattoni lineage especially well: intentional structural asymmetry. Trapattoni’s Zona Mista was deliberately unbalanced by design — he didn’t want both fullbacks bombing forward at the same time, because that leaves you completely exposed in transition. So one fullback would push high while the other tucked in alongside the center-backs, effectively forming an asymmetric back 3 rather than a flat back 4 that’s vulnerable on both sides at once.
That idea maps onto this Juventus squad in a way I think is unique to a lot of modern squads. Cambiaso is a real attacking weapon and a real defensive liability in the same body, which is exactly the kind of profile that benefits from an asymmetric setup rather than being asked to hold a flat, symmetric line. And the versatility elsewhere in the squad supports it — Kalulu can play right back, right wing-back, or tuck in as a makeshift right center-back in a back 3. Çelik can do the same. This works especially well when Jhon Lucumi joins the squad, which will be made official in relatively short order.
Call it a 4-3-3. Call it a 4-2-3-1. Call it a 4-4-2, or a 3-5-2, or a Christmas tree. Blending Spalletti’s positionless football with Trapattoni’s asymmetric balance means the numbers — the formation itself — don’t really mean anything. What matters is that you’ve got two different coaches’ ideas about how to build a team, and combining them gives you more ways to play to a squad’s strengths while masking its weaknesses, not fewer. Slot a more defensively-minded fullback in behind Cambiaso and free him from the left-back job entirely. He gets the opportunity to do what he’s actually good at — progressing the ball, holding width higher up the pitch — without the team paying for it in transition. Yıldız gets to live more in his preferred half-space. None of that requires picking a system and sticking to it. This team has the talent to make that work.
I don’t think Trapattoni’s specific football — the fixed roles, the version built entirely around a back-then style of defending — survives contact with the modern game intact. He said as much himself, in a book written three decades ago. He saw the positionless direction coming before it had a name. But the philosophy underneath the specific football — reduce decision latency, treat structure as something that produces freedom rather than restricts it, let asymmetry solve problems that symmetry can’t — that part hasn’t aged the way the football around it has. It just keeps getting rebuilt in different vocabulary.
There’s a lot of value in reading the old ideas and concepts from legendary managers. It’s not really about learning their system. It’s that going back to a text like this sharpens the way you evaluate the modern game. It forces you to separate the specific football from the idea underneath it — and once you can see that separation clearly, you start noticing the same underlying arguments showing up in teams that look nothing alike on the surface. Pep and Trapattoni would probably not recognize each other’s football as being from the same sport in some respects. But I think they’re answering a version of the same question, and that’s a more useful thing to carry into watching this Juventus team than knowing whether they lined up in a back 3 or a back 4 last weekend.
