It’s easy to forget in the hubbub that’s happened since, but the NBA Summer of 2026 got off to a huge start as the Miami Heat won the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, trading Tyler Herro and a few other assets for the multi-time MVP.
The Heat have a few smaller players. Andrew Wiggins, Bobby Portis, and…uhhhh…Davion Mitchell? But the reality is that 4 of their top 8 players by minutes played last season are gone, replaced by Antetokounmpo and not much else. That leaves Giannis and long-time center
Bam Adebayo as the tentpoles of the roster. Both play big-man positions. Outside of a raft of 32% three-point attempts from Adebayo, both like to play from 12 feet and in. Each star averages 20 points per game. Heck, Adebayo scored 83 against the Washington Wizards last year. But this is an odd lineup nonetheless, countercultural when it comes to the modern NBA and maybe common sense.
The question of the day is this: How do you think the Heat will fare this season? Are they engaged in some kind of chaotic chemistry experiment that will open up a new frontier in a league obsessed with three-point shooting? Will Erik Spoelstra’s coaching genius show through once again? Or is this a train wreck coming around the bend way too fast for comfort?
