German national team attacker Deniz Undav was shooting straight after his team’s 2-1 loss to the Ecuador and did not think that Germany matched the intensity and focus of the South Americans.
“Ecuador were more aggressive and sharper than we were. That’s something we need to learn from and draw the right conclusions. We weren’t as direct in our play and we didn’t create as many chances. We have to perform better and improve. But there’s no time to dwell on it – we’re back in action on Monday already,”
Undav said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Undav is not wrong, but even his honest assessment will not change some of the issues plaguing the Germans at the World Cup. In reality, being grouped with Curaçao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador (Thursday’s result notwithstanding) was a gift. The Germans were superior to each team on paper.
However, games are not always determined by whose resume looks better. From here on out, the Germans need to be a lot better.
