The Monarchs of Old Dominion were not scared of Enter Sandman on Saturday as they walked into Blacksburg, Virginia, and owned the Hokies of Virginia Tech 45-26 behind 339 total yards from their sophomore quarterback Colton Joseph.
Joseph, a Newport Beach, Calif. native, went 16-22 for 276 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the victory while adding 63 yards and a score on the ground. Trequan Jones led the Monarchs’ rushing attack with 101 yards on 13 carries and a score.
It was all Old Dominion from
the get-go as Ricky Rahne’s group exploded to a 28-0 lead at the half and 38-7 after three quarters of play. Virginia Tech was able to score 19 points in the final frame to make the scoreboard look better, but it was much too late.
Old Dominion stayed disciplined with only eight penalties on the night while garnering over 500 yards of total offense in the ACC win. Now sitting at 2-1, the Monarchs look like an early contender in the challenging landscape of the Sun Belt East division.
ODU will host Liberty on Saturday before opening its SBC schedule against Coastal Carolina to end the month of September.
