Earlier today (July 27), word went around the wrestle web about a new trademark WWE filed Cruz Montana. Filed last Friday, it lists the standard “Goods and services” explanation for trademarking a potential kayfabe wrestler name:
Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer rendered live and through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service; providing wrestling news and information
via a global computer network; providing information in the fields of sports and entertainment via an online community portal; providing a website in the field of sports entertainment information; fan club services, namely, organizing sporting events in the field of wrestling for wrestling fan club members; organizing social entertainment events for entertainment purposes for wrestling fan club members; providing online newsletters in the fields of sports entertainment; online journals, namely blogs, in the field of sports entertainment.
The name in question seemed Spanish, and considering there was already speculation about whether former TNA World champion Mike Santana would keep that name after signing with WWE and debuting in NXT last week, he seemed the likely recipient of “Cruz Montana”.

Rhyming to his old name makes sense for marketing and promotion, but still feels a bit lame They’re probably going for a Tony Montana reference, but some folks are going to get Miley Cyrus from it. Adding to the oddity of the change is that fact the new Cruz Montana has already appeared as Mike Santana on NXT several times.
