The Kansas City Chiefs started Sunday’s eventual 28-24 loss to the Denver Broncos down one of their two first round rookies after cornerback Mansoor Delane was ruled out before departing for the road contest on Saturday.
Early on, the Chiefs lost their other first round pick as defensive tackle Peter Woods left the game with a neck injury. Woods was initially listed as questionable to return, but he was eventually ruled out after halftime.
After the game, head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Woods had
suffered a stinger. That was the coach’s only postgame injury note.
The most curious absence from the lineup had nothing to do with injuries. For the second time this season, left guard Kingsley Suamataia was benched — with CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson calling it “a coach’s decision.”
As in Week 4’s contest against the Las Vegas Raiders, Suamataia was active for the contest but watched from the sideline as backup Mike Caliendo took every offensive snap.
Reid never confirmed the reason for Suamataia’s benching. He had nothing more to say on Sunday.
“It’s just between Kingsley and I,” was Reid’s only comment on the situation.
The Chiefs will return to practice on Wednesday hoping to get right from a two-game losing streak with the 2-6 New York Jets coming to town. We will monitor the practice status of Delane and Woods and pass along any further developments with Suamataia.
