The penultimate game of Colorado Rockies baseball is—perhaps mercifully—upon us. The Rockies are currently riding a four-game losing streak after being swept by the Seattle Mariners and dropping game one
of this series against the San Francisco Giants last night. Can the Rockies get at least one more win on the books fore the season draws to a close tomorrow?
Making his 31st and final start for the Rockies is left-handed Kyle Freeland. The Denver native’s ERA sits at exactly 5.00 coming into today. Can he post his first sub-4.00 ERA season since 2022? His last time out, Freeland enjoyed a Quality Start against the Los Angeles Angels, working six innings of one run baseball with five hits, a walk, and seven strikeouts.
On the bump for the Giants is the right-handed Justin Verlander. The future Hall of Famer has quietly put together a strong season at 42-years-old with a 3.88 ERA over 28 starts and 130 strikeouts over 146 innings pitched. Before his last start—a bumpy 4 1/3 innings against the Cardinals—Verlander had given up just one earned run in 25 innings across four starts.
The Rockies saw Verlander earlier this season back in May, where he went 6 1/3 innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits—including a home run—with four strikeouts and a walk.
Verlander utilizes a five pitch arsenal consisting of his low-to-mid 90s four seam fastball, a slider, a curveball, a changeup, and a sweeper. He can also throw a very rare sinker when needed, but has only done so eight times this season.
