You’ve probably heard by now that former Blue Devil Cam Reddish is out of the NBA and has signed to play in Lithuania with BC Siauliai. European basketball is pretty different in some ways and we don’t know exactly where BC Siauliai ranks or what their league is like, but we were interested to find out who their coach is: former Wake Forest star Darius Songalia, who played for the Demon Deacons from 1998-2002 when Dave Odom ran the show (except for his senior season when Skip Prosser took over).
Songalia was asked why Reddish is out of the league and he said this: “It’s hard to say why his NBA path stopped at this point. I’ve worked with many talented players who couldn’t establish themselves there — a lot of factors play a role.”
He also said this about what Reddish can bring to the team:
“His athleticism and physique are definitely top-level. I have no doubt he’ll be able to cover several positions for us. European basketball is getting faster and faster, and we believe he’ll fit in well.”
There’s really no particular reason why Reddish is not in the league. Certainly as Songalia points out it’s not a lack of talent. Reddish is immensely talented and was described by Arkansas coach John Calipari, who was at Kentucky at the time, as the avatar of positionless basketball. Somehow he has never quite gotten there, though.
However, turns out he has an out: his contract has an exit clause so that if an NBA or EuroLeague team wants to pick him up, it can.
