Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone spoke to the media ahead of their second game this week, as the Colchoneros look to build on a run of three wins in the last seven days.
Entering Sunday night’s contest
with Celta Vigo, Simeone was asked specifically about one of the new leaders in his team, Pablo Barrios, amid his call-up to the Spanish national team.
“(Barrios is) a young lad, from the club, growing in every way, in his personality, character,” Simeone said. “He helps us a lot, and the margin for improvement is infinite. As far as he wants to continue growing, we’re here to help him.”
Diego Simeone on Thiago Almada’s recovery
“Almada is training well. He got injured playing for Argentina, but he’s recovering well and took part in part of today’s training session. We’ll continue to take care of him so that he recovers as soon as possible. He’ll be fine for the Osasuna game (after the FIFA break).”
Diego Simeone on Almada being called up by Argentina
“Celta, Celta, Celta…”
Diego Simeone on Marcos Llorente
“I’m very happy for Marcos. The national team is a reward for his work at the club, it’s wonderful to be in the national team. He deserves it, he’s been carrying a few niggles. Let’s hope he can have a good game tomorrow.”
Diego Simeone on form
“The team is working well, winning generates enthusiasm. I really like how Celta plays. They deserved to win, not draw in the games they drew, but that’s football. They are a team with dynamic pressure, an aggressive, brave team, always looking to hurt their opponents.”
Diego Simeone on his players wanting the ball
“Characteristics of players define the style of every team. The players set the path that the manager must follow. We hope to get it right.”
Diego Simeone on Álex Baena
“It’s clear that the team has found a pattern of play in recent days. He was recovering, he made a great effort to be with us in these matches and that’s something I really appreciate. He’s in the process of finding his best form. Hopefully he can play for the national team, participate… And hopefully he’ll come back after playing for the national team better than he is today.”
Diego Simeone on results away from home
“We approach every match with enthusiasm and hope to continue on the same path we are on.”
