It has been a rough start to the season for the Indianapolis Colts. The offense hasn’t always been the best, but so much of the blame for an 0-2 start falls on the defense. They were atrocious. Like, last in the league in almost every category atrocious. If you watched the game against the Texans, however, you would have had no clue how bad it’s been.
The Colts were so bad on defense they had to change green dot duties after the first game. A little embarrassing to say the least…Games of 503 and 523
yards against the Ravens and Chiefs, respectively, were tough to watch at times. Allowing 41 and 33 points is too much for an offense to keep up with. Yes, it’s too much, but to be fair, the Chiefs game did go to overtime, so those stats are slightly misleading. That performance was at least a step in the right direction after the train wreck that was Week 1.
The Colts swallowed up the Texans on Sunday and look like they turned over a new leaf. Yes, this is the same Texans team that only scored 6 points against the Bengals, but they did put up 378 yards in that one along with 381 yards and 31 points against the Bills to open the season. The Colts held them to 223. They may not be the Ravens or Chiefs, but they are no slouch either. DeForest Buckner was in beast-mode, and the rest of the defense followed suit. They were still shaky down the stretch and did allow a late touchdown to lose the lead, but comparatively, they were light-years better than before.
So, what’s the real story? Are the Colts closer to Week 1 or Week 3? They are probably somewhere in the middle but closer to what we saw against Houston. In regulation, they gave up 27 points to the Chiefs and were closer to 400 yards. That isn’t great, but against the Chiefs, it might not be that bad. Ideally, the defense on Sunday is what we see the rest of the year. For the Colts to have success, they’re going to need it.
