The Iowa Cubs were shut out by Indianapolis (Pirates), 4-0.
Will Sanders was activated off the Development List to make this start and he got the loss. Sanders allowed three runs on five hits over five innings. He struck out four and walked no one, although he did hit one batter. Two of the three runs came on a home run by a rehabbing Jack Suwinski.
Iowa had just five hits. Left fielder Rafael Morel went 2 for 3.
Knoxville Smokies
The Knoxville Smokies got battered by the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 7-3.
Starter Yenrri Rojas took the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits over four innings. Two of those six hits were home runs. Rojas walked two and struck out four.
Knoxville was held hitless until center fielder Brett Bateman led off the seventh inning with a single. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Andy Garriola cranked a two-run home run. It was Garriola’s 12th home run this year, his fourth for Knoxville and his second in two games.
Those were the only two hits of the game for Knoxville. Bateman was 1 for 3 with a stolen base and a sacrifice fly. Garriola went 1 for 2.
This ends the Smokies season. They finished the second half with a 37-31 record, which put them in second place in the North Division, 5 1/2 games behind Birmingham. Their overall record for the season was 69-67.
